Maybe he’s hoping to reach a key Obamacare demographic, the low-information voter.
Dan Pfeiffer, Obama’s senior adviser, said the appearance is part of the president’s constantly evolving communications strategy. “We have to find ways to break through,” said Pfeiffer. “This is essentially an extension of the code we have been trying to crack for seven years now.”
Some of the more memorable lines:
Galifianakis: What is it like to be the last black president?
Galifianakis: It must kind of stink, though, that you can’t run three times.
Obama: Actually, I think it’s a good thing. If I ran a third time, it’d be sort of like doing a third ‘Hangover’ movie.” Didn’t really work out very well, did it.
In between the comedy bits, Obama promoted Healthcare.gov.
“Oh, I’ve heard of that,” Galifianakis said. “That’s the thing that doesn’t work? Why would you get the guy that created the Zune to make your website?”
Best humor of the interview: Galifianakis asked Obama if he’ll build his presidential library in “Hawaii or in Kenya?”
